Job Summary

Under the supervision of the surgical services coordinator and the registered nurse performs preperation and sterilization of instrumentation and equipment for the hospital facility.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Performs and documents tests daily (bowie dick, sterrad, OPA, sterilizer, and washer) 
  • Maintains autoclave record, and reports failure of biological indicators and sterilizer loads to appropriate personnel. 
  • Properly wraps instruments and assembles sets correctly. 
  • Loads and operates washer, sterilizers, and sterrad according to manufactures' guidelines. 
  • Performs hand washes on delicate instruments. 
  • Responsible for reporting repairs on autoclaves and other equipment, calls repairman as necessary.
  • Thoroughly inspects all instruments for bioburden and defects while maintaining a list of needed and broken instruments given to the Surgical Services Manager.
  • Accountable for reporting any missing instruments immediately to Surgical Services Manager, board runner, and surgical technologist.
  • Properly and accurately documents in instrument log book and loaner instrument log and ensures IFU is on site. 
  • Maintains instrument room daily to make sure the area is neat and items in proper place and orders supplies needed for instrument room.
  • Maintains and updates count sheets for instrument sets as necessary.
  • Responsible for rotating instruments on storage shelves and monitoring the integrity of packages.
  • Maintains and updates count sheets for instrument sets as necessary. 
  • Maintains critical skills as defined for assigned role. 
  • Knowledge and Skills Required

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • High school Diploma or the equivalent preferred.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years experience in surgical instrument sterilization field preferred. 
  • Effective communication skills; both orally and written. 
  • Computer skills required.
  • Ability to work within a team to ensure quality patient care.
  • Strong problem solving skills.
